Symbolic Syst in Everyday Life

This course considers the power and practice of symbols and symbolic systems that anchor ideas, create perceptions, develop motivations and even passions within and between communities. In order to understand both the thinking and techniques that lie behind complex issues of representation, it focuses on the anthropological study of the creation and embodiment of meaning in everyday life. Attention will be paid to a variety of approaches ranging from structuralism to feminism, from Marxism to psychoanalysis. Prerequisites: AN200 or permission of the department.
